9 The cel lular compos i t i on of 33 solid and cystic periapical g r an u lo m as was quant i t a ted by a differential m o r p h o m e t r i c technique . Macrophages were the p r e d o m i n a n t i n f l ammato ry cell, fo l lowed in descending numer ica l o rde r by lymphocy te s , p lasma ceils, and neutrophi ls . I n f l ammato ry cells compr i sed sl ightly more than half the fo rmed e lements ; the others were connec t ive tissue e lements . There were no significant qual i ta t ive or quant i ta t ive d i f ferences in the i n f l ammato ry c o m p o n e n t s of lesions differ ing in m o r p h o l o g y (solid vs cystic), s y m p t o m a t o l o g y (pain vs no pain), du ra t ion (less than one year vs more than one year) , and t r ea tmen t ( endodon t i c in te rvent ion vs no in tervent ion) . Th e h u m a n periapical g r a n u l o m a thus reflects a complex of immuno log ic and n o n i m m u n o l o g i c in f l ammatory react ions.

Expression and immunohistochemical localization of leptin in human periapical granulomas
BACKGROUND Leptin, initially described as an adipocyte-derived hormone to regulate weight control, is expressed in normal and inflamed human dental pulp, being up-regulated during pulp experimental inflammation. Leptin receptor (LER) has been identified in human periapical granulomas. The aim of this study was to analyze and characterize the expression of leptin in human periapical granulomas. ...
متن کاملExpression and immunohistochemical localization of leptin receptor in human periapical granuloma.
AIM To investigate the expression and immunohistochemical localization of leptin receptor (LEPR) in human periapical granulomas. METHODOLOGY Periapical inflammatory lesions were obtained from extracted human teeth and teeth which underwent periapical surgery. After their histopathological categorization as periapical granulomas (n = 20), they were examined by immunohistochemistry using human ...
متن کاملPathogenesis of Apical Periodontitis: a Literature Review
OBJECTIVES This review article discusses the host response in apical periodontitis with the main focus on cytokines, produced under this pathological condition and contributing to the degradation of periradicular tissues. The pace of research in this field has greatly accelerated in the last decade. Here we provide an analysis of studies published in this area during this period. MATERIAL AND...
متن کاملIsolation and characterization of inflammatory cells from the human periapical granuloma.
Twelve histologically-confirmed periapical granulomas were evaluated by conventional immunologic rosette assays for the presence of T-lymphocytes and complement receptor-bearing lymphocytes. A technique for dispersing the granuloma cells into suspensions was adopted to facilitate performance of the assays which were not applicable to tissue sections. Differential cell counts by an acridine oran...
متن کاملImmunohistochemical Expression of PCNA and Ki-67 in Periapical Granuloma and Radicular Cyst
Objectives: Periapical Granulomas (PGs) and Radicular Cysts (RCs), as the most common odontogenic lesions have yet unclear pathogenesis. This study was aimed to compare PCNA and Ki-67 expression in PGs and RCs and evaluate their possible relationship with two lesions. Methods: In this cross-sectional descriptive study, twenty PGs and twenty RCs were evaluated immunohistochemically using an a...
